About Auckland Wall

What it is

Auckland Wall (奥大墙) is an independent, student-run community for University of Auckland students (Auckland, New Zealand). It is not affiliated with the university.

Who posts here

Reading needs no account. Posting, commenting and writing course reviews need a verified university email (aucklanduni.ac.nz / auckland.ac.nz), so content comes from real UoA students. Content that breaks the community guidelines is removed.

Many posts are in Chinese; the app translates posts and comments into English.

Where the data comes from

Forum posts and comments: written by current students who verified a university email. Posts can be anonymous; anonymous content carries no author information at all.

Course reviews: reviews written by students on this site, plus public course feedback — student society course guides, StudentVIP star ratings, Reddit comments an AI model judged to be reviewing the course, and Xiaohongshu notes. Each course page counts every source separately; third-party content appears only as attribution, figures and short quotes with a link to the original.

Course catalogue (titles, credit points, faculties, study periods): from University of Auckland's public handbook. The university's own pages are authoritative.

Campus events: collected regularly from the public pages of the student union, the university and city event listings, each with its original link.

Club directory: from the student union's public club listing.

Reposted content in posts (Xiaohongshu, WeChat articles and so on) is labelled with its source and links to the original.

How course scores are calculated

Each review scores three things from 0 to 5: usefulness, difficulty and would-recommend. Difficulty is shown as given — higher means harder.

The overall score is worked out per review — the average of usefulness, (5 − difficulty) and would-recommend, counting only the parts that were filled in — and then averaged across all of a course's reviews. A harder course therefore scores lower overall.

The overall score matches the course card in the app and merges four sources: reviews on this site (three scores), student society guides (scored from their text), StudentVIP (one star rating each) and Reddit (comments judged to be reviewing the course, one would-recommend star each). Xiaohongshu notes are not scored.

The structured rating given to search engines (Google star ratings) uses only reviews written on this site, and only once a course has at least three; the page prints that figure separately.

How often it updates

Post pages are regenerated from the database every hour; campus events are collected every 6 hours; course reviews and scores update with each release of the site (current data: 2026-10-24).

Scale

3202 courses in the catalogue, 571 of them with student reviews or discussion (5050 reviews in total), 18 public posts, 303 clubs.
